Wiktor Magne Mølleskog, Merchant Navy Sailor
When Wiktor Magne Mølleskog came up with the idea of organising a Liberation Convoy to honour the maritime war effort during WWII, he immediately took steps to realise his vision. The Norwegian ship captain, who is enjoying his retirement in London, quickly persuaded the Norwegian-British Chamber of Commerce and the Norwegian embassy to get involved.
Several owners of historic vessels that had all been part of the war effort in a variety of ways soon came onboard. Contact was established with local authorities in the Shetland and Orkney Islands and in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Newcastle, as well as in Bergen in Norway. Teams of volunteers were organised and put to work. Wiktor remains a key planner and organiser of the Liberation Convoy and he will take part in the crossing from Bergen to be in Lerwick in time for Victory in Europe Day on the 8th of May.

Starting in 2016, Wiktor campaigned and helped fundraise for a memorial to be erected. In 2022 this was unveiled at the Norwegian Church in St Olav’s Place. This memorial commemorates every Navy or Merchant Navy sailor that took part in the WWII along with their families. Wiktor also campaigned to get funding from the Norwegian Government to pay for former WWII sailor Oscar Anderson’s care home fees after Oscar had run out of funds.
