Stavanger Municipality
The occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany during the Second World War began on 9 April 1940 after Operation Weserübung
Stavanger Municipality has a rich wartime history. As a key coastal hub, Stavanger played a crucial role during Nazi-Germany’s occupation of Norway.
The city was swiftly taken on 9 April 1940, with Sola Airport becoming one of the first locations in history to be captured by airborne troops. This gave the German forces a strategic advantage, enabling control over air and sea routes along Norway’s western coast. Stavanger’s residents endured years of occupation, with many engaging in underground resistance efforts despite the risks.
Through its cultural heritage initiatives, the municipality supports projects that highlight Stavanger’s role in wartime events, as well as the resilience of its people.
