The Pole Star Fund was founded using the proceeds Jon Michelet earned from his novel A Hero of the Sea. Its purpose is to document the wartime experiences of sailors who served in the Norwegian merchant fleet and navy during the Second World War, the voyages of Norwegian ships and naval vessels through conflict zones after the war and the broader experiences of Norwegian soldiers across all military branches in the post-war era.
